Crucifixion of Christ
For the most part, Byzantine art does not concentrate on depicting human reactions or feelings. The depiction of Christ’s crucifixion does not overly focus on His suffering. the deeper spiritual reality of the events taking place. Christ’s death is never seen apart from His Resurrection. As we sing on feasts of the Cross; “To Your cross O Master, we bow in veneration and we glorify Your Holy Resurrection”.
The flexion of Christ’s body towards the right, the bowed head and the closed eyes indicate the death of the Crucified. His face, however, preserves a grave expression of majesty in suffering.
“Jesus Christ, King of the Jews.” (the first letter of each word, INBI in Greek) is written at the top.
