St John in silence
Saint John is the only apostle given the title of Theologian. Rather than focusing on the chronological events of Jesus’ life in his gospel, he concentrates on the spiritual meaning behind these events. This particular depiction of St John appeared in the sixteenth century. The evangelist makes the sign of the cross over his lips, in prayerful contemplation of the mysteries he wrote about. St Evagrius wrote, “If you are a theologian you truly pray. If you truly pray you are a theologian.”
